Troubleshooting? Here's Your First Step - REBOOT!

Internet down? Windows wigging out? Is Outlook out to lunch?
Before you start a Google search or call tech support, try this one simple thing:
REBOOT
If that doesn’t work, try a complete power-down Shut-Down, then Restart.
Years ago while visiting an IT Department of a government agency I noticed a small poster by the help desk; “Did you try rebooting your computer!?” indicating they expected the user to try his/her own troubleshooting step of rebooting.
There are probably dozens of reasons why this should (or shouldn’t) work, but the fact is a simple reboot solves many issues. It isn’t just for Windows based computers either. The last time I called tech support on my home Internet the first question was “Did you power-cycle the DSL/Cable modem and the router”. Embarrassed that is all it took, I’ve since even taught my kids that first step:
“Hey Dad, the Internet isn’t working.”
“Did you reboot your computer?”
“oh, yeah, I’ll try that first… still doesn’t work”
“Did you reboot the DSL/Cable modem and the router?”
“Oh yeah, I’ll do that… hey Dad, it’s working! Thanks!”
